On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome Dr Kumi Pillay, Medical Director and Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at Cygnet Health Care, alongside Rachael Chamberlain, Business Development Director – Neurological, for our latest NeuroHealth External Speaker Webinar.
Together, Dr Pillay and Rachael delivered a thought‑provoking and highly informative session exploring the often‑overlooked intersection between brain injury, mental health, service provision and legal frameworks within neuropsychiatric rehabilitation. Drawing on extensive clinical and operational experience, they provided invaluable insight into how specialist neuropsychiatric services support individuals whose cognitive, behavioural and psychiatric needs are not fully met within traditional neurorehabilitation pathways.
The session offered a clear and practical understanding of why neuropsychiatric rehabilitation is essential for achieving meaningful, long‑term outcomes for clients with acquired brain injury. Dr Pillay shared powerful clinical insight into the complex relationship between brain injury, behaviour, cognition and mental health — challenging assumptions around “mild” injury and so‑called “rehab potential”. His message was clear: with the right specialist input, meaningful improvement is possible – even many years post‑injury.
Key topics covered included:
– The high prevalence of psychiatric disorders following brain injury.
– Why behavioural and mental health needs are often under‑recognised.
– The importance of holistic, multidisciplinary neuropsychiatric rehabilitation.
– Applying the Mental Capacity Act, DoLS and Mental Health Act in complex neuro cases.
– Choosing the most appropriate legal framework where capacity, objection or risk is a factor.
– A compelling case study showing how reassessment and positive risk‑taking can transform quality of life.
Rachael complemented this with a practical overview of Cygnet Health Care’s neuropsychiatric rehabilitation pathways, offering valuable insight into service models, commissioning routes, funding considerations and the importance of early, appropriate intervention. Her guidance on helping Case Managers navigate complex systems and advocate effectively for clients was particularly impactful.
A huge thank you to Dr Pillay and Rachael for sharing their expertise, real‑world experience and practical guidance with our team. The specialist services Cygnet Health Care provide play a vital role in ensuring individuals with complex neuropsychiatric needs receive the right care, at the right time, to achieve meaningful and lasting outcomes.
And finally…for anyone wondering about the webinar title… yes, the “F code” really does refer to ICD‑10 mental health classifications that begin with an F – not an emotional reaction to case managers navigating capacity, funding and statutory systems on a Friday afternoon!
