“Tom has gone out of his way and beyond to assist C and us as a family. I believe he has C’s best interests at heart and has ensured that C does not lack anything or miss out on anything he is entitled to.” – Mrs O, Mother of Injured Client.
Since qualifying as a Physiotherapist in 2004, Tom has gained over 20 years of clinical experience working within the NHS and private sector. This has provided him with expert knowledge and advanced skills in the core clinical areas in both adults and paediatrics. Tom has built a sound theoretical foundation whilst utilising research and problem-solving skills to become a therapist and Case Manager that can apply and further develop evidence-based practice. Tom is an experienced Case Manager, working with both adults and children who have sustained complex injuries, including brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, amputation or other orthopaedic injuries.
Tom started his career working as a rotational Adult Physiotherapist, gaining experience in neurosciences, orthopaedics (elective and trauma), musculoskeletal outpatients, medical rehabilitation, rapid response and the acute assessment unit, oncology and palliative care, ITU/HDU, cardiothoracic, vascular and amputee, and community-based rehabilitation.
Tom also gained experience working across acute, community and education settings, with paediatric clients. He worked as a Team Lead and Highly Specialist Community Physiotherapist on the NHS within a busy and dynamic London community Paediatric service. He developed specialist knowledge and advanced clinical skills working as an autonomous practitioner providing physiotherapy assessment and treatment to children aged 0-19 years with complex long-term conditions such as Cerebral Palsy. This role encompassed service provision, management and organisation as well as collaborative working with all members of the child development service multidisciplinary team, education staff and Social Services. Tom established a local transition pathway for adolescent children with complex long-term conditions who were moving from children’s to adult therapy services. He has also led service provision and other clinical audits to help review and develop client and family-centred groups and services.
Tom has developed specialist knowledge and skills in aquatic therapy, orthotic assessment and management, splinting and casting, as well as assessing the need for the provision of specialist equipment such as standing frames, assistive mobility aids, seating and sleep systems for the 24-hour management of posture and tone.
Over the years, Tom has regularly attended and actively participated in multidisciplinary assessments and reviews, as well as child in need/child protection meetings, and also child and adult safeguarding. Tom continually strives to offer all his clients and their families/carers a client-centred, evidence-based and holistic approach. This has involved close working relationships with his clients and their families/carers, and the setting of mutually agreed SMART goals to record and maximise client progress. Experience gained from joint working with specialist paediatric and adult neurological specialists, orthopaedic surgeons/practitioners, as well as other expert medical and therapy professionals, has not only developed Tom’s own clinical reasoning skills and treatment approach but has also benefited his clients and their families/carers.
Tom consistently employs reflective practice and undertakes regular CPD relevant to his role. He is registered with the Institute of Registered Case Managers (IRCM) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and is a member of the British Association of Brain Injury and Complex Case Management (BABICM), the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists (APCP).
