Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Ellis Parry, Co-Founder and CEO at neumind – a pioneering digital health company transforming neurorehabilitation for individuals and families following traumatic brain injury (TBI), in our External Speaker Webinar series.
Ellis shared the deeply personal story behind neumind’s creation. The idea was born from Ellis’s experience supporting the recovery journey of his identical twin brother, Luke, who sustained a severe TBI in 2012. During this journey, Ellis saw first-hand the significant gaps in traditional rehabilitation pathways and how these impacted long-term recovery, independence, and quality of life.
He summarised these gaps as:
– The “Care Cliff” – A sharp drop in support after discharge from intensive care.
– Lack of Repetition – Strategies and information not reinforced between sessions, creating a “Groundhog Day” effect for those with memory and executive function impairments.
– Poor Continuity of Care – Frequent changes in carers or practitioners, resetting progress.
– Disorganised Information – Reliance on paper-based systems that are impractical for those with cognitive challenges.
– Family/Carer Role – Families want to help but often lack guidance, unintentionally hindering independence.
The lightbulb moment came in 2015 at the Oliver Zangwill Centre for Neurorehabilitation, where Luke used a simple 1980s paging device called “NeuroPage” to receive timed prompts. Ellis realised the potential to modernise this concept into a smartphone app – initially codenamed “Alfred” and later evolving into neumind.
The neumind app delivers bite-sized, timely “nudges” based on the cognitive pyramid principle: supporting fundamental processes (memory, attention) before tackling higher-order goals.
Ellis demonstrated key features of the app and web portal, including:
– Integrated Platform – Connecting clients, families, & clinicians.
– Prompts & Reminders – For tasks, medication, and appointments.
– Custom Journals – Tracking rehab progress, memories, and more.
– Symptom & Activity Trackers – Monitoring fatigue, mood, and sleep.
– Rehab Goals – Linking goals to daily tasks for purpose-driven recovery.
– Nudges – Repetitive messages to reinforce strategies and motivation.
– Centralised Resources – Worksheets, PDFs, and videos shared by clinicians.
– Data & Reporting – Logs, graphs, and adherence tracking.
Ellis also highlighted how AI is being integrated into the app, and the game-changing potential it holds for neurorehabilitation. Neumind is now rolling out gradually with a growing community of clients and professionals across neurorehabilitation services. To learn more, visit www.neumind.co.uk.
A huge thank you to Ellis for sharing neumind’s story and showcasing the innovative technology he has built with his brother, inspiring new conversations about how we can better support life after brain injury.
